Mexican Coffee: The Rising Star of the Specialty Coffee World

August 17, 2024 by Shruti Purohit

Mexico has a long history of producing exceptional coffee beans. The Mexican coffee business has significantly influenced the country's culture and economics. The south of Mexico's terrain has high-altitude mountains, fertile soil, and low population density. It makes for the perfect place for specialty coffee production! While it's always fascinating to explore details about distinct coffees from around the world, it's also crucial to know how to keep those beans fresh. With this blog, we'll learn more about Mexican coffee and how Ecotact's coffee packaging bags and storage solutions may help keep it farm-fresh.

Discovering Mexican Coffee: Brief History

The Mexican coffee industry saw its origin in the 1700s, when Spanish colonists introduced the first coffee plants in Veracruz. Since its introduction, coffee was less widely adopted than chocolate and other alternatives. But over time, coffee plantations began to rise in the country's south, fueled primarily by German and Italian migrants. Coffee gained considerable traction as an export crop in the 1870s when coffee producers in Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Chiapas began to sell the beans in bulk. With time, smaller local producers became a key part of the market in the early twentieth century, as subsistence farmers discovered that coffee growing was profitable and suited to the south's warm climate and steep terrain.

During the 1900s, coffee played a critical part in the country's economic development, offering access to foreign currency and allowing otherwise impoverished villages to become financially sustainable. By the early 1980s, over one million acres of land in 12 states were used for coffee bean farming, directly sustaining approximately 3% of the population. Despite the different kinds of failures and problems, Mexico continues to revive and raise its coffee industry. Today, there are over 500,000 producers in the country, with more than 95% being small growers with less than seven acres of land. Cultivation is scattered over 16 states, with over 90% concentrated in the three largest states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Veracruz.

Delightful Mexican Coffee Culture

Apart from being a producer, Mexico is also a major coffee consumer. Much of the best-grade beans are preserved in the nation for its domestic market. CafĂ© culture is quite dominant in numerous places in Mexico. Generally, Mexicans drink coffee in the afternoon rather than in the morning. So, hermetically sealed bags are quite necessary to maintain the freshness of Mexican coffee for a prolonged span.

Mexican coffee has a distinctive flavor and texture. It is recognized for its light body, smoothness, and delicate flavor, with hints of chocolate, nuts, and spices. Citrus, flowery, and hazelnut undertones can be found in some Mexican coffees, depending on the region where the beans were cultivated. For example, Chiapas coffee is noted for its rich, nutty flavor, but Oaxaca coffee has a more nuanced flavor with fruit and chocolate undertones. Veracruz coffee is recognized for its robust, unique flavor.
